Edwin L. Rothfeld

Edwin L. “Ed” Rothfeld, 80, of Roseland died June 15, 2011. As a child he lived in Hillside.

Dr. Rothfeld was an accomplished scholar, teacher, and clinician with more than 100 publications to his name. He spent his entire career at Newark Beth Israel Hospital, beginning as a resident in 1956. He was Beth Israel’s first Cardiac Fellow (1959), the founder of its Pulmonary Function Lab (1962), and the founder of its Fetal Electrocardiography Unit (1964). He also founded its Heart Station, which he directed until he retired in March.

After graduating as valedictorian from Hillside High School, he graduated as valedictorian from Muhlenberg College and Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia.

He spent two years in the U.S. Navy as chief of cardiology at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Corpus Christi, Texas.

He was a black belt in judo and spent years as a referee before being sidelined by a knee injury in the 1990s.

He is survived by his brother, Donald; two daughters, Jane Rothfeld-Brunst and Laura Rothfeld Bond; his son, Samuel; and six grandchildren.

Services were held June 21 with arrangements by Bernheim-Apter-Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel, Livingston. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.
