Edwin Lewinson
Edwin R. Lewinson, 82, of South Orange died April 10, 2012. He was born in Detroit.
Blind from birth, Dr. Lewinson fought against many forms of discrimination. He worked to increase accessibility for blind people, and in 1966 was a plaintiff in the lawsuit in New York state that opened jury duty to blind people.
He taught history at Seton Hall University for over 30 years, retiring in the 1990s. He also authored two books, John Purroy Mitchell: The Boy Mayor of New York, 1966; and Black Politics in New York City, 1974.
He earned a PhD in history from Columbia University.
He is survived by his sister, Virginia Lewinson; his aunt, Isabel Lieberman; and five cousins, Susanne Feldstein, Natalie Nelson, Leonard and Friedelle Wolson, and Dorothy Pleasant.
A memorial service was held at the Ethical Culture Society, Maplewood. Memorial contributions may be made to National Federation of the Blind of NJ, 245 Spruce St., Bloomfield, NJ 07003; the Jewish Guild for the Blind, 15 W. 65th St., New York, NY 10023; or New Jersey Peace Action.
