Elizabeth Farber
Elizabeth (Betsy) Farber (Goldberg), 70, of Yardley, Pa., died Feb. 19, 2013.
A distinguished mathematician and leader in her field, Mrs. Farber was a professor of mathematics at Bucks County Community College and coordinator of the mathematics program. She was the recipient of numerous honors and awards for her teaching and service.
She began her teaching career at Hopewell Valley Regional High School, taught in the Princeton Regional and Lawrence Township school districts, and was an adjunct professor at The College of New Jersey and Thomas Edison College. She was a reader for Advanced Placement Calculus exams administered by ETS. Recognized for her leadership in mathematics, she was a consultant and presenter at national and international mathematics conferences. She was an early designer of distance learning and e-courses.
She was the author of 10 college textbooks in statistics, calculus, algebra, and computer science. Her text, Elementary Statistics Picturing the World, is one of the most popular textbooks in statistics used in colleges and universities throughout the world and has been printed in English, Portuguese, and Chinese.
She graduated cum laude in three years from Penn State University and was the recipient of a Regent’s Scholarship. She received her master’s degree in mathematics from Trenton State College (now the College of New Jersey).
A strong advocate and champion for women’s issues and diversity, she was instrumental in designing a program that brought salary equity to women at Bucks County Community College. In 2004 she was the recipient of the Alumni Association’s Professional Achievement Award and in 2007 she received a special commendation by the college’s president for exemplary achievements and service.
She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Richard; two sons, Douglas (Sue) of Singapore and Michael (Jeanne) of Vancouver, Wash.; a brother, Matthew Goldberg of Oakland, Calif.; four grandchildren; and her mother-in-law, Alyce Farber of Lake Worth, Fla.
Services were held Feb. 24 with arrangements by Orland’s Ewing Memorial Chapels, Ewing. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
