Esther Lampert

Esther Lampert (Kopelman), 84, of Wayne died Nov. 21, 2011. She was born in Berlin in 1927.

While she was too young to leave, Mrs. Lampert’s older siblings fled to London via the Kindertransport to escape the Nazis. Her father was arrested and all their goods were confiscated. At age 12, representatives of the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society found her and sent her to England, where she eventually was reunited with her siblings. Both her parents were killed by the Nazis.

She completed nurse’s training, and spent World War II helping wounded soldiers and enduring the London Blitz. Afterward, she immigrated to the United States, and found work as a nurse in Beth Israel Hospital in New York City, which enabled her to send food packages to her sisters and brother in England. She lived in Montclair from 1976 to 1994.

She was a yoga practitioner, teacher, and life-long healer. She touched many lives with her healing art, including AIDS patients at the start of the epidemic in New York.

In 1982, she and her husband Sam endowed the library at Congregation Shomrei Emunah, Montclair, in memory of their son Alan, who died in 1981.

She is survived by her husband of 61 years; her son Jordan; a brother, Manfred Kopelman; and three grandchildren.

Services were held Nov. 23 with arrangements by Jewish Memorial Chapel, Clifton. Memorial contributions may be made to the Arthritis Foundation, HIAS, or the Alan Lampert Memorial Library at Shomrei Emunah.
