Exhibit to highlight JCC’s ‘Creativity and Continuity’

AN OPENING RECEPTION for the exhibit “Creativity and Continuity: A Celebration of 140 Years of JCC Arts Programming” will be held Saturday, Nov. 11, 7-8 p.m. in JCC MetroWest’s Gaelen Gallery East at the Cooperman JCC in West Orange. The exhibit will be on view through Dec. 28.

The reception will be followed at 8 with the screening of “Bye Bye Germany,” an Extra! event of the New Jersey Jewish Film Festival.

“Creativity and Continuity” highlights many of the arts and cultural programs offered by the JCC through its 140-year history — both at its original location in Newark and for the past 50 years in West Orange.

JCC programs through the years have included a chamber music series, a resident orchestra, children’s and adult theater performances, a poetry series, a book festival, a speakers series, the NJ Jewish Film Festival, and ongoing art exhibits. The Gaelen Center for the Arts currently maintains a School of the Arts offering classes for adults and children, a children’s theater program, performances and films, and a series of art exhibits in the Gaelen Galleries, both East and West (at the Aidekman campus in Whippany).

This November and December in West Orange, painter Mary Cosh’s lively paintings of teenagers and children are on display in the Arts/Theater Lobby, while an exhibit of Janet Resnick’s eclectic dreidel collection continues in the Steiner Court Showcases.

“Bye Bye Germany” combines drama and humor in an ironic look at Holocaust survivors in postwar Berlin who embark on a scheme to secure the funds to immigrate to America. Tickets cost $13 in advance, $15 at the door, $11 for seniors and students, free for film festival sponsors; visit jccmetrowest.org/njjff or call 973-530-3417. The 18th annual NJ Jewish Film Festival will be held March 15-25, 2018.

Gaelen Gallery East is open during JCC hours: Monday-Thursday, 5:30 a.m.-10 p.m.; Friday, 5:30 a.m.-6 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday, 7 a.m.-6 p.m.
