Fredric R. Goldstein

Fredric R. Goldstein, 66, of Princeton Junction died May 3, 2011. He was born in Brooklyn.

A professor of geology for over 30 years at The College of New Jersey, Dr. Goldstein also served as an adjunct professor at Bucks County Community College, Rider University, and Thomas A. Edison State College.

He earned his BS in geology from Brooklyn College, his MS from Miami University, and his PhD from Rutgers University.

Several times voted “Teacher of the Year,” he worked closely with NASA to form a partnership with the College of New Jersey to bring moon rocks to the campus. He worked closely with former Gov. Thomas Kean on the Governor’s Award Panel for Project Pride of New Jersey. He also inspired younger students in the Lawrence Township School system with presentations related to earth sciences.

He was the recipient of the John H. Moss Award for Excellence in College Teaching and a Faculty Salute for Courage, Creativity and Commitment to Higher Education from the American Association of Higher Education. He also raised funds in the classroom through recycling for Ronald McDonald House. He was the founder of the Geological Association of New Jersey and the North American Geological Academic Alliance Program and sat on the Department of Higher Education’s New Jersey Academic Alliance Program.

He was the author of books and workbooks and served as a reviewer of articles for the “Journal of Geology.”

He is survived by his wife, Barbara; two daughters, Mindy Knapp and Laurie Padron; his brother, Joel; his sister, Gloria Passen; and three grandchildren.

Services were held May 6 with arrangements by Orland’s Ewing Memorial Chapel, Ewing. Memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice Memorial Fund at Princeton Healthcare System Foundation, Princeton; the Alzheimer’s Association of Greater New Jersey, Denville; or the Dr. Fred Goldstein Scholarship Fund at the College of New Jersey.
