Gilbert Melnick
Gilbert S. Melnick, M.D., of Caldwell died Jan. 17, 2018. He was born in the Bronx.
Dr. Melnick became the director of radiology at St. Michael’s Medical Center in Newark and founder of School of Radiologic Technology from 1966 to 1982. He was the chair of Radiology Department at University of Medicine and Dentistry, Newark, from 1982 to 1986; chair of radiology, Morristown Memorial Hospital, 1986-1990; and was appointed fellow in the American College of Radiology in 1977.
He graduated from Cornell University and SUNY Downstate Center Medical School, Brooklyn, in 1954. He interned at Meadowbrook Hospital, Hempstead, N.Y., 1954-55, and was a fellow in radiology and medical fellow in cardiovascular radiology at University of Minnesota Hospital, 1957-1961, and a Yale-New Haven Hospital instructor of radiology, 1963-1966.
He was a captain in the U.S. Army Medical Corps from 1955 to 1957.
He served for many years as a volunteer with the American Cancer Society Eastern Division, and was instrumental in the Campaign on the Hill anti-smoking lobbying efforts.
He was a lifelong collector of model trains.
He is survived by his wife, Noreen Moore-Melnick; three sons, Daniel Melnick, David Melnick (Hillary Kramer), and Jeffrey Melnick (Rachel Rubin); his daughter, Deborah Melnick (Owen Nochimson); and four grandchildren.
Services were held Feb. 18 with arrangements by Bernheim-Apter-Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel, Livingston. Memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Society or Doctors Without Borders.
