Top of the week: Home Run Happy: Ian Kinsler had three home runs for the Detroit Tigers over the past week. Ryan Braun had two for the Milwaukee Brewers, both coming in an 8-4 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on April 15. Joc Pederson cracked one out for the Los Angeles Dodgers to ensure a 3-1 win over the San Francisco Giants on April 17. That day also marked the return of Jon Moscot from the disabled list for the Cincinnati Reds against the St. Louis Cardinals. He pitched 5.2 innings, allowing three runs on six hits (two home runs) in a 4-3 loss but was not involved in the decision.
Welcome back: The Memphis Grizzlies signed Jordan Farmar to 10-day contract in March and were impressed enough to keep him around. He appeared in 12 games, 10 as a starter, and averaged 9.2 points and 3.1 assists per game. The Grizzlies managed to grab the eighth and final playoff berth in the Western Conference. They lost to the San Antonio Spurs, 106-74, in the first game of their opening round matchup.
In other playoff action: Andre Burakovsky and the Washington Capitals hold a 3-0 lead over the Philadelphia Flyers. Jason Demers and the Dallas Stars lead Jason Zucker and the Minnesota Wild, two games to one. Eric Nystrom has been a scratch for the Nashville Predators who lead the Anaheim Ducks, two games to none.
Historic week: Brad Ausmus homered in the eighth inning to give the Detroit Tigers a 1-0 win over the Boston Red Sox (April 22, 1999). Ausmus is the current manager for the Tigers. Basketball player and executive Ernie Grunfeld was born on April 24, 1955. Dolph Schayes was elected to the Basketball Hall of Fame on April 26, 1973.
