Harold Berman

Harold “Hesh” Berman, 92, of Highland Park died Jan. 28, 2012. A lifelong resident of Highland Park, he was a councilman and twice served as mayor.

The first Highland Park resident to enlist in the service after World War II broke out, he was a staff sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps, fighting at the Battle of Iwo Jima. He was a commander for the Jewish War Veterans’ Post #133 and later became state commander.

He was a member of the first graduating class of Highland Park High School in 1938 and was the first “5 Letterman” in sports. He was a semi-pro football player with the Plainfield Saracens.

He was on the board of directors at the Highland Park YMHA and a member of Highland Park Conservative Temple-Congregation Anshe Emeth. He was a charter member of the Highland Park Exchange Club.

A very talented and artistic man, Hesh was known for his woodworking and carpentry skills. His plaques are displayed throughout the town, including Highland Park Borough Hall, the Police and Fire Departments, and the First Aid Squad, as well as in the Middlesex County Office Buildings.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Jocelyn (Miller); his daughter, Beatrice Rubin of Manalapan; his son, Bruce of Piscataway; and a grandson.

Services were held Jan. 20 with arrangements by Crabiel Parkwest Funeral Chapel, New Brunswick. Memorial contributions may be made to the Highland Park First Aid Squad or Deborah Hospital, Browns Mills.
