Herbert Salt

Herbert Bernard Salt, 75, of Florham Park died Dec. 24, 2011. Born and raised in Brooklyn, he also had lived in West Orange, Livingston, and West Palm Beach, Fla.

Mr. Salt was the president and owner of Excelsior Merchandising Corp. in Union for over 50 years. He was also the president and owner of Galaxy Merchandising Company in Union, and was the founder of S&S Trade Shows. All of these businesses are linked to the alcoholic beverage industry, in which he mentored many executives.

He attended Brooklyn College.

He was a Freemason and a member of the Spirits Square Club. He hosted holiday parties for underprivileged children and supplied winter coats and presents. For many years he donated carloads of stuffed animals to Children’s Hospital in Mountainside. He was honored after 9/11 by the Port Authority Police for his support, and was given one of the first statues made of remnants of the Twin Towers. He was a longtime active supporter of the Union Police Department, which recognized him with the Silver Lifetime Award.

In West Palm Beach, he and his wife volunteered weekly as teachers’ aides in the school system after education budgets were cut, reading to young students.

He is survived by his wife of over 52 years, Marian; two daughters, Michele Salt Horn of Short Hills and Donna Salt of Florham Park; a sister, Gloria Gover of Brooklyn; and two grandchildren.

Services were held Dec. 27 with arrangements by Bernheim-Apter-Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel, Livingston. Memorial contributions may be made to Leukemia and Lymphoma Society-LLS of NJ, 14 Commerce Dr., Suite 301, Cranford, NJ 07016.
