Irving Metzger

Irving Metzger, 89, of Monroe Township died Jan. 23, 2013. Born in Union City, Mr. Metzger had also resided in Cranford.

Mr. Metzger was employed in the advertising field until his semi-retirement when he worked for Educational Testing Services in Princeton.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in advertising from New York University.

An Army Air Force veteran of World War II, he served as a first lieutenant and was a B-17 pilot. His plane was downed over Germany and he became a POW, and subsequently received a Purple Heart for injuries sustained.

He was a member of Temple Beth El of Cranford, where he served as a board member and an officer of the Men’s Club.

Predeceased by his wife, Phyllis (Ellis), he is survived by his daughter, Rita Schwartz and her husband, Bernie of Morganville; his son, Martin and his wife, Rosi of Cranford; his brother, Murray and his wife, Joan of Florida; his grandchildren; and his great-grandchildren.

Services were held Jan. 24 at Menorah Chapels at Millburn, Union. Memorial contributions may be made to the Phyllis and Irving Metzger Fund at Temple Beth-El Mekor Chayim, 338 Walnut Ave., Cranford, NJ 07016.
