Israelis ‘race’ to learn about local agencies

Visitors from the Israeli city of Arad learned about local Jewish institutions during “The Amazing Race Around Greater MetroWest.” As part of their week-long visit to the area, members of the Partnership 2Gether Renewal team and their local hosts fanned out across the community July 6 to meet with staff at 18 agencies and schools. 

“We wanted to find a fun way to introduce them to the agencies and services of the Jewish community to better understand federation,” said Randi Brokman of the Israel Program Center at Jewish Federation of Greater MetroWest NJ, who developed the idea with colleague Leah Maas. The visits “opened their eyes to the effort it takes to be Jewish outside the State of Israel.”

The IPC’s Renewal process creates “living bridge” projects between the federation and its partner communities in Israel. 

The team members from Arad were to spend Shabbat together and take part in services and learning with Rabbi Robert Tobin of B’nai Shalom in West Orange. Three members of the congregation are on the Renewal team. 

They will also present “Southern Exposure: An Introduction to Arad” on Thursday, July 9, at the Aidekman Family Jewish Community Campus in Whippany. The social event will begin at 7:30 p.m. and include wine from Arad, Israeli music, poetry, and photography.
