Jacob Swotinsky

Jacob (Jack) Swotinsky, 90, of Whippany died May 4, 2018. Born in Brooklyn, he later moved to Morristown and raised his family in Morris Plains. 

Mr. Swotinsky started a 40-year career as a chemical engineer at Picatinny Arsenal. His work there included research and development of rocket propellants and other munitions used in the defense of the United States, and development of pollution abatement systems. He also held several patents. He retired in 1990 and then worked for a few years as a consultant.

He graduated from City College of New York and earned a master’s degree from University of Cincinnati. 

He served in the Army shortly after World War II and was stationed in Guam as a medic.

An avid tennis, golf, and bridge player, he was a member of Temple B’nai Or in Morristown for over 65 years and held offices in its Men’s Club and Renaissance groups. As a member of JCC MetroWest, he was involved with Men at Leisure and Couples at Leisure.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Anita (Friedman); three sons, Mark (Arlene) of Morris Plains, Robert (Michelle) of Massachusetts, and Glenn of West Orange; a brother, Arthur (Marlene) of Massachusetts; and five grandchildren. 

Services were held May 7 with arrangements by J.L. Apter Memorial Chapels of Dover. Memorial contributions may be made to Michael J. Fox Foundation or Atlantic Hospice in Morristown.
