Joan Goldsmith

Joan Morrison Goldsmith, 88, of Livingston died April 16, 2019. She was born in Buffalo, N.Y., and was raised in both Buffalo and in Birmingham, Ala.

Mrs. Goldsmith was a professional artist for most of her adult life. Early in her career, she worked as a shoe designer in New York City.

From 1978 to 1987, she was on the faculty of the New Jersey Center for Visual Arts in Summit. During the early 1990s, she was an artist in residence at the Newark Museum and was also on the museum’s Arts Workshop faculty. She was a member of The Phoenix Gallery in Soho, one of the co-operative “10th Street Scene Galleries” that showcased vanguard contemporary art in downtown Manhattan, and had solo exhibitions there in the 1980s and 1990s. Her work — which included the large abstract canvases for which she was best known as well as prints, works on paper, collages, and sculpture — was featured in solo and juried group exhibitions throughout the Northeast as well as in Alabama and Washington state, and is included in public collections in New York, New Jersey, Alabama, Pennsylvania, and North Carolina.

She trained at the Moore Institute of Art in Philadelphia, The Art Students League of New York, and the New School for Social Research.

She is survived by her husband, David L.; two daughters, Amy Charmatz and Jane Davis; her son, Peter; and two granddaughters.

Private services were held with arrangements by Bernheim-Apter-Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel, Livingston. Memorial contributions may be made to Mental Health Association of Essex/Morris County.
