JTS faculty bring a day of learning to S. Orange

In what appears to be a first-ever program, faculty of the Jewish Theological Seminary will offer a day of learning for the Essex County Jewish community.

Four lecturers from the Conservative movement’s flagship institutions will speak on their favorite topics at Congregation Beth El in South Orange on Sunday, April 11.

The event is being cosponsored by Beth El, Oheb Shalom Congregation of South Orange, Congregation Shomrei Emunah in Montclair, and United Synagogue of Hoboken.

“It’s always great to hear a great lecturer. Here we have four great lecturers taking on their favorite subjects,” said William Gold, cochair of Beth El’s adult education committee. “That’s the key — it’s something they really like to talk about. So it should be informative and entertaining.”

Presenters will include Dr. Joel Roth, Louis Finkelstein Professor of Talmud and Jewish Law, discussing Jewish Law in the Conservative Movement; Dr. Alan Cooper, provost and Elaine Ravich Professor of Bible, on Seething a Kid in its Mother’s Milk: Does It Really Mean I Can’t Have a Cheeseburger?; Dr. Amy Kalmanofsy, assistant professor of Bible, addressing David and Jonathan, Ruth and Naomi: Relationships in the Hebrew Bible; and Dr. Anne Lerner, assistant professor of Jewish literature, whose talk will center on The Persistence of the Akeidah: The Holocaust and Israel Memorial Day.

The program will run from 9:30 a.m. until 3:15 p.m. and is open to the public. A contribution of $18 is requested, and lunch will be available for $10.
