Leonard Demak
Dr. Leonard Demak of East Windsor died March 14, 2015. Born in Cincinnati, he lived in Detroit; Louisville, Ky.; and Knoxville, Tenn., before returning to Detroit as a teenager. He moved to Monroe Township in 1991.
Dr. Demak was an educator, publishing numerous articles and consulting with various school districts in Michigan and across the country. A teacher and school principal in Highland Park, Mich., and later superintendent of schools in Oak Park, Mich., he was also a member of a number of education commissions and advisory boards.
Using the GI Bill, he was the first in his family to graduate from college, earning bachelor’s and master’s degrees and a doctorate in education from Wayne State University.
He served in the Army during World War II as an infantry instructor and was discharged as a sergeant in 1946.
He was a member and later president of Oak Park Board of Education, and president of Congregation B’nai Moshe in Michigan.
After moving to Monroe, he became a commissioner of its Historic Preservation Commission.
Predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Eleanore (Yendick), he is survived by his daughter, Michele Demak (Jeffrey) Epstein; his son, Richard (Brenda Breslauer); and five grandchildren.
Services were held March 15 with arrangements by Orland’s Ewing Memorial Chapel, Ewing. Memorial contributions may be made to U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum or Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
