Main Event will put agencies in spotlight

Agencies that serve the Jewish community of Monmouth County and beyond will take center stage at the Main Event.

The 12th annual fund-raiser, which benefits the Women’s Philanthropy of the Jewish Federation of Monmouth County, will spotlight beneficiary agencies that receive federation dollars.

It will be held Thursday, May 6, at Congregation Magen David in Ocean.

Event chair Robin Wander of Long Branch explained the change in format from previous years, when one community activist was honored.

At this year’s Main Event, she said, “we chose to honor our beneficiaries because a lot of people don’t know they are our beneficiaries. Some people may not realize that when they give to federation they are helping these agencies, and a lot of their dollars are staying right here in this community.”

Wander said a representative from each agency will be introduced to the gathering so that “we can thank the people who do a lot of the everyday work, but who normally wouldn’t get thanked, although they make our community a better place.”

The funds raised will go toward the federation’s annual campaign. The federation supports medical, social, and educational services for children and adults; activities for special-needs children; assistance for senior citizens and Holocaust survivors; and chaplaincy programs. Abroad, the money goes to resettlement in Israel of Jews from the former Soviet Union and Ethiopia and assistance to Israeli victims of terror and war.

In addition to the Monmouth federation, the agencies to be cited at the Main Event are Jewish Family & Children’s Service, Rutgers Hillel, JCC of Western Monmouth County in Manalapan, Ruth Hyman JCC-Jewish Community Center of Greater Monmouth County in Deal, Hillel Yeshiva in Ocean, Solomon Schechter Day School of Greater Monmouth County in Marlboro, Yeshiva at the Jersey Shore in Deal, and the Jewish Heritage Museum of Monmouth County in Freehold.

Also to be recognized will be the Friendship Circle of the Chabad of Western Monmouth County, which recruits teen volunteers to help youngsters with special needs; and Special Strides, a Monroe organization that assists developmentally challenged children through therapy using horses and for which federation provides scholarships for local children.

Attendees will be also be treated to the federation’s version of Dancing with the Stars, with instructors from Fred Astaire Studios in Red Bank.

While guests enjoy the two-step and cha-cha, they will feast on hors d’oeuvres and beverages before turning to a table bearing an array of dessert choices. There will also be raffle drawings; prizes will include a designer watch by Gary Michaels Jewelers of Manalapan.

The evening will begin at 6 p.m. The cost is $75 with a minimum gift of $236 — $180 for first-timers — to the 2010 campaign, payable through Dec. 31. For information, call 732-866-4300, ext. 12, or go to jewishmonmouth.org.
