Marion Slatnick

Marion Slatnick (Charles), 90, of Somerset died June 2, 2015. Born and raised in London, she also resided in Newark; Jacksonville, Fla.; Irvington; Edison; and East Brunswick.

Mrs. Slatnick’s family endured World War II. She dug herself and her mother and sister out of their bombed home during the Blitzkrieg. 

She worked in retail and then for the Ministry of Agriculture during the war. She met and married an American GI in London, moving with him to the United States and becoming a U.S. citizen. 

She worked in retail establishments and had a business as a seamstress.

She was very active in the community and with synagogue and Jewish organizations. When her son joined the Cub Scouts she became a den mother and later den mother of the year. She also coached a local youth baseball team, leading it to township victory that year. 

Having finished school in England at the age of 14, she earned her GED on her first attempt at the exams.

She created garments, household furnishings, and toys of fabric and yarn, knitting and donating more than 500 baby hats to local hospitals and receiving recognition by the Grange. When her eyesight started to fail, she began to crochet, donating more than 600 blankets to Project Linus, the Salvation Army, veterans’ homes, the homeless, and hospitals. She recently received a certificate from the Salvation Army and a Letter of Commendation from President Barack Obama.

Predeceased by her husband, Louis, and her son-in-law, David Guskind, she is survived by her daughter, Donna Guskind; her son, Martin (Rita); a sister, Jeanne Dinmore; and five grandchildren.
