Marvin A. Katz

Marvin A. Katz, 85, of Lincroft died Feb. 13, 2019. Born in New York City, he lived there until 1981, when he moved to Lincroft with his family.

Mr. Katz, a former New York Police Department (NYPD) detective, served a distinguished 20-year career (1957-1977), attaining the rank of Detective-Lieutenant. He was a squad commander at NYPD police headquarters at the time of his retirement.

Following his retirement from the NYPD, he launched a second career as a private investigator and international security consultant and litigation expert. He was the owner and operator of two major investigative firms: Business Integrity International and Katz Associates. He often testified in federal and state courts around the country as an expert and was called upon by multiple networks to offer his expertise on the airwaves following major national terrorist incidents, including the Oklahoma City bombing in 1995 and the 9-11 World Trade Center disasters.

He had two college degrees: a bachelor’s from John Jay College of Criminal Justice and a master’s from C.W. Post.

Earlier in his life he was an aspiring professional baseball player. He played in the St. Louis Browns (now Baltimore Orioles) and once had a tryout with the New York Yankees.

He is survived by his wife of almost 61 years, Susan; his son, Eric D. Katz of Watchung; his daughter, Sheri Schuman of Tinton Falls; and four grandchildren.

Services were held Feb. 15 with arrangements by Menorah Chapels at Millburn, Union; a full ceremonial unit and honor guard of 18 NYPD police officers participated in the services. Memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer’s Association.
