The aim of the 2024 Mayors Summit Against Antisemitism, held Dec. 11-13 in Beverly Hills, Calif., was to provide attendees with a comprehensive understanding of the state of antisemitism.

The meeting, under the theme “Directing Change from City Hall,” was hosted by the Combat Antisemitism Movement (CAM) and chaired by Mayor Lester Friedman of Beverly Hills. It united more than 200 municipal leaders from across the United States and Canada and included speakers, workshops, and special events, all designed to supply the mayors with strategies and solutions to combat antisemitism in their own communities.

Among the invited participants was Mayor Hector Carlos Lora of Passaic.

The sessions presented included Antisemitism Experienced: A Student’s Story; Strengthening Education: The Role of Mayors in Addressing Antisemitism in Schools and Universities; and Building Bridges Amid Tensions: Municipal Strategies for Interfaith Harmony.

A Holocaust survivor and a Nova Music Festival massacre survivor discussed resilience and perseverance following tragedy and trauma, and in Breaking the Cycle of Hate: Municipal Responses to Extremism and Radicalization, a reformed neo-Nazi and an ex-Islamist shared their journeys from extremism to becoming advocates for empathy and allyship.
