Met Council distributes holiday food
The Metropolitan Council on Jewish Poverty — better known as the Met Council — America’s largest Jewish charity dedicated to serving the needy, is set to help more than 181,000 food-insecure Jewish people from New Jersey and New York.
Packages include such essentials as fresh produce, canned fruits and vegetables, pasta, rice, flour, challah, matza ball mix, tuna, and tea biscuits. Holiday items include honey, apples, grape juice, and round challahs, as well as chicken, fish, and dairy products. The Met Council also plans to distribute more than 432,000 eggs.
Locations in New Jersey include Oheb Shalom Congregation in South Orange and Jewish Family Service of Central New Jersey. In Rockland County, N.Y., spots include Ostraha Shul in Airmont and Talmud Torah Bobov of Monsey in Spring Valley.
The total value of the food distributed is $4,781,000; it goes to more than 143 sites in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut. The Met Council’s staff, supported by more than 600 volunteers, including community leaders and elected officials, are handling the packaging and distribution. The first distribution began just after Labor Day, with deliveries continuing through the High Holiday season.
