Remember and tell in South Orange
On Sunday, March 23, the South Orange-Maplewood Interfaith Holocaust Remembrance Committee has scheduled an afternoon devoted to the memory of the six million Jews and millions of others the Nazis and their collaborators murdered in the Holocaust.
At 3, a solemn march will begin; it will bring participants from Spiotta Park in South Orange to Congregation Beth El there. At 4, the service of Remembrance and Hope will begin.
Dr. Jud Newborn, a lecturer, author, and curator who is, among many other accomplishments, a founding historian at Manhattan’s Museum of Jewish Heritage and a recipient of the Anne Frank Center’s Spirit of Anne Frank award.
Stephen W. Schwartz and Sylvia Ben-Asher will be awarded the prestigious Sister Rose Thering Holocaust Education Award.
Ms. Ben-Asher, a survivor of the Warsaw ghetto, and Mr. Schwartz, a local architect, traveled to dozens of schools to teach students about the Holocaust.
Ms. Ben-Asher talked about her experiences, and Mr. Schwartz and the students recreated the Warsaw Ghetto using Lego blocks.
The program will feature prayers and reflections from faith leaders and songs from interfaith choirs, highlighting the collective commitment to combat resurgent antisemitism and hatred.
The community is welcomed to the march and the service. Learn more at rememberandtell.org.
