Robert Salvin

Robert Salvin, 85, of Dunellen died Feb. 4, 2012. Born in the Bronx, he was a lifelong Dunellen resident.

Mr. Salvin began his career as a project engineer for U.S. Gypsum Company in Clark from 1949 to 1952. In 1952, he became chief facilities engineer at Johnson and Johnson, New Brunswick, working there until his retirement.

He received a BS degree in mechanical engineering from Rutgers University. As a graduate and active alumnus, he was very involved as president of the class of 1949 and as a member of the President’s Council, organizing fund raisers, class activities, and reunions.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as an Electronic Technician’s Mate 2nd Class. He subsequently served as Americanism Officer for 10 years for the Dunellen American Legion Post #119, and was responsible for overseeing the Americanism program in the Dunellen school system. He was also involved in erecting monuments in Dunellen’s Washington Park in honor of veterans of World War II as well as the Korean and Vietnam wars. There is also a monument at the Rutgers University library, which Robert was responsible for, in honor of the veterans who served in his class.

He is survived by his sister, Beatrice Salvin of Dunellen, and many family and friends.

Services were held Feb. 6 with arrangements by Higgins Home for Funerals, Watchung. Memorial contributions may be made to Rutgers’ University Scholarship Fund, Rutgers University Foundation, Office of Annual Giving, 303 George St., Suite 301, New Brunswick, NJ 08901.
