Robert Slater
Robert Slater, 70, of Jerusalem died March 25, 2014. Born in New York City, he grew up in South Orange and moved to Jerusalem 42 years ago.
A journalist and author, Mr. Slater worked as a reporter for the Bucks County Courier Times in 1968-69 and then for the UPI bureau in Trenton before moving to Israel in 1971. In Israel he worked for the Jewish Telegraphic Agency, UPI, and Time magazine (1976-96). In addition, he wrote 30 books, including biographies of Yitzhak Rabin, Golda Meir, and Moshe Dayan. He also authored books on U.S. business leaders such as Jack Welch, George Soros, Bill Gates, Walmart founder Sam Walton, Donald Trump, and Martha Stewart. He wrote Portraits in Silicon, which consisted of short biographies of contributors to the invention of the computer, and Great Jews in Sports. With his wife, he wrote Great Jewish Women, Great Jewish Men, and Great Moments in Jewish History. He was chairman of the Foreign Press Association in Israel from 1987 to 1990. He mentored journalists at The Jerusalem Post, and for the last two years, wrote a column, “The Robert Slater Interview,” for the Jerusalem Report.
He graduated from Columbia High School in Maplewood. He earned a BA from the University of Pennsylvania in 1966 and an MSc from London School of Economics in 1967.
He is survived by his wife, Elinor Resnik Slater, whom he married in 1966; two daughters, Miriam Binyamini and Rachel Slater, and his son, Adam Slater, all of Israel; a sister, Roslyn Winick of Maplewood; and seven grandchildren.
Services were held March 25.
