Ronald Berman

Ronald Berman, 86, of Princeton died Aug. 31, 2018.

An attorney since the early 1960s, early in his career, Mr. Berman served as assistant commissioner of public transportation for the State of New Jersey and urban renewal attorney for the city of Trenton. He was a founding partner of the law firm Warren, Goldberg & Berman in Trenton.

Also the founder of R. Berman Development, he was an early champion of mixed-use urban renewal, with many of his efforts focusing on his hometown of Trenton. In addition to developing several of the city’s office buildings, he redeveloped the historic Roebling wire rope complex into a venue that includes a 10,000-seat sports and entertainment arena now known as the CURE Insurance Arena and the Roebling Market shopping center.

In 1999, he acquired Trenton’s first professional hockey franchise, the Trenton Titans, which won the ECHL championship in 2005; the Berman family later sold the team to the New Jersey Devils. He was also the cofounder of DKM Realty with the Dyson-Kissner-Moran Corporation of New York.

He received his undergraduate and law degrees from Rutgers University, where he served as editor-in-chief of the Rutgers Law Review. He was awarded a Ford Fellowship at Harvard Law School.

Among his many civic endeavors and honors, he served as a trustee of the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Foundation, was a founding trustee of the Garfield Foundation, was named Developer of the Year by the National Association of Industrial and Office Parks, and received an honorary doctor of laws degree from Rider University.

He was actively involved throughout his life with many Jewish philanthropies.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Marie; three sons, Michael (Victoria), Geoffrey (Joanne), and Daniel (Karren); and seven
grandchildren.

Services were held Sept. 3 with arrangements by Orland’s Ewing Memorial Chapel, Ewing.
