Rubin Tolvin

Rubin Tolvin, 90, of Union died March 16, 2013. Born in Newark, he resided there until 1969, when he moved to Union.

Mr. Tolvin worked with his father in the family business, I. Tolvin and Son, a wholesale and produce business located in the Newark area for over 40 years.

He attended high school in Newark.

He was an Honorable Disabled U.S. Navy veteran, serving on the USS Helena and the USS Columbia. He was wounded in battle both times and rescued by the USS Radford Destroyer. He received the Purple Heart for his valor and was honored by former Gov. Christie Todd Whitman and featured on Union Cable TV in 2010, the 65th anniversary of the end of World War II. He was a member of the USS Radford Alumni Organization.

Predeceased by his wife of 58 years, Matilda Rodes, in 2003, he is survived by his son, Jeffrey (Nadine) of New York City; his daughter, Barbara (Shelly) Horn of Belleville; and a sister, Yetta Greenstein of Livingston.

Services were held March 18 with arrangements by Menorah Chapels at Millburn, Union. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, Newark Beth Israel Medical Center, or the Disabled Veterans National Foundation.
