Sonya Rubin

Sonya Rubin (Sondak) of West Orange died May 14, 2019. Born in Jersey City in 1929, she lived most of her life in South
Orange.

Ms. Rubin taught school in the South Orange/Maplewood/Millburn school systems. She later became an adjunct professor at New York University, where she taught several courses in History of Modern Education in the 1980s.

She graduated from Rutgers University in 1950, and received an M.A. in education from Seton Hall University in 1975 and a Ph.D. in Philosophy and History of Education from NYU in 1985.

She was active in the PTA, and in fund-raising for Hadassah Hospital. She received a national award from Hadassah for enrolling more new members than anyone else in the United States, and was a vice president for four years.

Predeceased by her husband, Irving, and a daughter, Donna, she is survived by two daughters, Caren Rubin and Madlyn Goldberg; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services were held May 16 with arrangements by Bernheim-Apter-Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel, Livingston.
