Stanley A. Model

Stanley A. Model, 90, of West Orange died May 8, 2011. He was born in Brooklyn.

He was a distinguished and dedicated educator in the Newark Public School system for 35 years. Beginning as a playground supervisor, he was a special education teacher at Branch Brook School and the principal of Boylan Street School. Recognized for his leadership, he served as president of the Schoolmen’s Club, Principal’s Association, and the Newark chapter of the Council for Exceptional Children. He also taught education courses at Newark State College (now Kean University). Model owned and operated Lake Hiawatha Day Camp during the 1950s.

He attended Boys High School in Brooklyn, where he was selected for the school’s Athletic Hall of Fame.

He majored in physical education at New York University, followed by a master’s degree in physical therapy.

Upon graduation in 1942, he enlisted as a private in the U.S. Army and served until 1946, leaving as a lieutenant. Initially he provided physical conditioning, but as he returned wounded from combat he directed physical rehabilitation efforts. He continued to provide physical therapy to veterans for several decades, and served as vice president for the NJ chapter of the American Physical Therapy Association. He served as an education officer in the Air Force reserve for 24 years, retiring as a major.

He continued to participate in sports for most of his life, playing tennis, sailing, and speed skating into his 80s.

He is survived by his wife of almost 63 years, Phyllis; his son, Lawrence of Pomona, NY; his daughter, Barbara Gelb of Millburn; a brother, Bernard of Queens; and three grandchildren.

Services were held May 9 with arrangements by Menorah Chapels at Millburn, Union. Memorial contributions may be sent to the JCC MetroWest’s Margulies Senior Center, West Orange.
