Stuart Tanenbaum

Stuart W. Tanenbaum, 93, of Morris Plains died Nov. 24, 2017. He was born in the Bronx and also had lived in Syracuse, N.Y. 

Dr. Tanenbaum was a professor emeritus at S.U.N.Y., College of Environmental Science and Forestry (ESF). He was dean of the College’s School of Biology Chemistry and Ecology, 1973-85, and professor of chemistry until 1983. He specialized in biotechnology and published over 150 articles, was a holder of several patents, and authored a book. 

He taught at University of California, Berkeley, and later was on the staff in basic medical sciences (microbiology) at Columbia College of Physicians & Surgeons, serving as assistant to full professor over a span of 20 years. During this interim period, he was a visiting professor at the Instituto Superiore di Santis, Rome, in 1964 and director for Molecular Biology at the National Science Foundation in 1971. After moving to Syracuse in 1973, he assumed an administrative position at S.U.N.Y.-ESF and concurrently as adjunct professor at S.U.N.Y. Upstate Medical School. He received the Syracuse Chapter Sigma Xi faculty research award and S.U.N.Y.’s Best Teaching Award. 

He graduated from City University of New York. After earning a Ph.D. in biochemistry at Columbia University, he pursued post-graduate studies in biochemical genetics at Stanford University.

An Army veteran of World War II, he was decorated with the Combat Infantry Award and three Bronze Stars for action in the European Theater.

Predeceased by his wife, Hannah, in 2013, he is survived by his daughter, Stefanie of Morris Plains; his son, Jonas (Tamaryn Pratt) of Charlotte, N.C.; and two grandsons.
