TEMPLE SHA’AREY SHALOM in Springfield is undergoing some changes.
The preschool has a new director, Mindy Rossman, who has many years of experience as a preschool director at JCC MetroWest in West Orange and at Temple Ner Tamid in Bloomfield.
She is joined by two new teachers, Mary Ellen DeJohn and Kristi Rubin, and special education teacher Genny Schwartzberg has joined the staff to help students who have special challenges learning Hebrew.
An innovation being implemented at the temple’s religious school is that Hebrew will be taught not by grade level, but according to proficiency. Students will continue to meet in grade-level groups to learn about Jewish history, values, holidays, and customs.
KeShet, Sha’arey Shalom’s Hebrew high school, has five separate tracks: Sacred Choices, to learn how Judaism can help in dealing with social concerns; Jewish film, how filmmakers depict issues confronted by contemporary Jews; politics and Jewish history, relating contemporary politics to Jewish experience; tikun olam, the mandate to improve the world; and Bamitbach (In the kitchen), the preparation and appreciation of Jewish food.
The temple will also offer a series of Friday night guest speakers, including Rabbi Jonah Dov Pesner, director of the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism, and Rabbi Neal Gold, director of program and content at the Association of Reform Zionists of America.
