Victor Schnur
Dr. Victor M. Schnur, 97, of Monroe Township died Jan. 17, 2019. Born in Newark, he resided in South Orange, East Orange, and West Orange before moving to Monroe 32 years ago.
Dr. Schnur was a dentist in West Orange for 38 years before retiring in 1986.
After graduating from Columbia High School, he received a bachelor’s degree from New York University and a dental degree from New York University College of Dentistry in 1946.
He served in the Army Dental Corps during World War II. He was stationed at Fort Lewis in Washington state and Fort Ord in California, where, at both stations, he was primarily involved in preparing soldiers for overseas duty. He achieved the rank of captain.
In addition to being a life member of the American Dental Association, New Jersey Dental Society, and Essex County Dental Society, he was a past president of the Newark alumni chapter of the Alpha Omega dental fraternity.
He was an amateur sculptor and painter in his retirement years, and was also active in the Concordia Table Tennis Club, where he was president for several years. As a member of the U.S. Table Tennis Association, he participated in a number of official tournaments.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Claire (Schlank); a brother, Melvin D. Schnur of Wayne; three nieces; and a nephew.
Services were held Jan. 20 with arrangements by Mount Sinai Memorial Chapels, East Brunswick.
