The Teaneck Historical Society presents “When Warplanes Crashed into Teaneck,” a walking tour with Daniel Levin, on June 8, at 10:30 a.m. The free tour marks the anniversary of the World War II mid-air collision of two fighter planes over Teaneck.

The walk includes some places associated with the crash, which happened on May 24, 1942. Participants will hear the remarkable story of how, less than six months after Pearl Harbor, and with Nazi U-boats repeatedly sinking ships visible from New Jersey beaches, people assumed that the area was under attack. Debris rained down on Teaneck homes, houses were in flames  —  and amazingly, everyone survived.

Dr. Levin, an amateur local historian, will talk about what the newspapers reported at the time, interviews conducted this past year with the sons of both pilots, and the secret report—classified by the Air Force for more than 50 years—about what really happened in the sky that day. Daniel Z. Levin, a member of the Teaneck Historical Society and a Teaneck resident since 1998, has a degree in American history and is a professor at Rutgers Business School.

To RSVP, email Teaneckhistoricalsociety@gmail.com, or meet at the Rodda Center at Votee Park that morning.

The 1.8-mile route will take about 90 minutes. The rain date is June 22. Details are at tinyurl.com/TeaneckPlaneCrashTour
