Bernard Cohn
Bernard (“Bernie”) C. Cohn of Delray Beach, Fla., formerly of Monroe Township, died Sept. 6, 2012. He was born in New Brunswick and lived most of his life in New Brunswick and Highland Park before moving to Delray Beach nearly two years ago.
Mr. Cohen spent most of his working life in the automobile and scrap metal business.
He was a well-known community figure. Among his honors, he was a recipient of the first Community Leaders of Distinction Award from the Middlesex County Regional Chamber of Commerce. He was a past president and later chairman of the board of directors of the Middlesex County Regional Chamber of Commerce. He was Sergeant-at-Arms of The 200 Club of Middlesex County, which provides scholarships and other assistance to the families of law enforcement and public safety officials who are killed or disabled in the line of duty, and an active member of the Sunrise Optimist Club of Freehold.
At the Forsgate Country Club in Monroe, he organized golf tournaments that raised money for various charities, including The 200 Club, American Cancer Society, Middlesex County Police Chiefs, Spina Bifida Association, and the Middlesex County Improvement Authority.
He was a longtime member of Congregation Etz Ahaim in Highland Park; his grandfather, Nahum Cohn, one of the earliest Jewish immigrants to settle in New Brunswick, was a founder and honored member of Ahavas Achim, New Brunswick’s first Orthodox congregation (1918), now located in Highland Park.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Sarah Mair Cohn; his son, Eric of Boynton Beach, Fla.; a brother, Jules of New York; and a grandson.
