Clarifying Conservative synagogues
Regarding “Tradition vs. Inclusion” (Feb. 23), members of the Rabbinical Assembly are not voting next week on “whether to allow non-Jews to receive membership status in synagogues.”
The upcoming vote, by the General Assembly of Kehillot, which includes representatives from each kehilla in the governance of the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism (USCJ), is whether to accept a change in language to the membership section of USCJ’s Standards for Congregational Practice to support each congregation’s independence in developing its own criteria for membership.
USCJ and its partners are seeking to help facilitate exploration on this topic, not dictate outcomes — it is up to each congregation to make any changes to their current policies or culture.
