Chabad of West Orange welcomed a new Torah scroll on June 11; it was donated by Philip and Shirley Levitan in memory of their parents, Lewis and Leah Levitan and Rabbi Leizor Shmuel and Bella Septytor.

About 120 community members, friends, and relatives attended the program to watch as the final letters were written in the scroll. The Torah was raised for all to see and then covered with a purple velvet cover and silver crown. Afterward, all the Torah scrolls were brought out of the ark to “greet” the new one. Rabbi Mendy Kasowitz led the community in eight hakafot (circuits around the bimah) with music, singing, and dancing. A lavish dairy buffet followed.

“There is no better way to remember our parents and their devotion to Torah and Yiddishkeit, then to have a new Torah written and dedicated in their memory,” Mr. Levitan said. “I am so thankful to Hashem for enabling Shirley and me to perform this mitzvah, the final and 613th mitzvah in the Torah in honor of our parents.”
