Esther Friedel

Esther Friedel (Schmulewitcz), 90, of Baltimore died Sept. 17, 2012. Born in Zdunska Wola, Poland, she survived several ghetto liquidations and concentration and labor camps in Poland during the Holocaust. After World War II she left Poland and settled at a relocation and rehabilitation camp in Sweden, where she met her future husband, Mordeci, who had been a rabbinical student. Together they moved to Baltimore.

The Friedels had owned a grocery business, from which she retired over 40 years ago.

She had attended Bais Yaacov School for Girls and was taught by the first graduates of the school.

She was a member of the sisterhood of the Suburban Orthodox Congregation of Baltimore as well as Hadassah, Pioneer Women, Mizrachi, and Amit Women, all of Baltimore. She was also an avid participant in many needlecraft hobbies.

She is survived by her husband; her son, Samuel of Baltimore; two daughters, Rebecca Friedel of Baltimore and Sharon Fersel of Springfield; and a sister, Sala Achtman.

Services were held Sept. 19 with arrangements by Ross’ Shalom Chapels, Springfield.
