Family on display
“A FAMILY ALBUM,” an exhibit of oil portraits and multi-figure paintings by Verona artist Ronnie Horn, is on display at the Verona Public Library through Dec. 30.
Drawn from contemporary and vintage photo sources, including a few photos taken with Brownie box cameras in the 1940s, the portraits reveal the experiences and personalities of one extended and diverse family over three generations.
“I’m fascinated by the relationships among the subjects and the way they present themselves to the person taking the photo,” Horn said. “My hope is that visitors to this exhibit will sense the unspoken bonds that link this family together and relate these paintings to their own family histories.”
The paintings include a group portrait of workers in a sweat shop, grandparents outside their Coney Island grocery store, pre-adolescent girls on a beach pretending to be Miss America, a bar mitzva in Jerusalem, and a woman visiting her father in Japan. The artist’s father figures in two paintings, a large portrait and a small study of his hands holding a newspaper.
