Fighting BDS
Gilbert N. Kahn is a professor of Political Science at Kean University.
A group of Jewish activists led by some American trained leaders in the English town of Brighton—the Sussex Friends of Israel– came up with a simple yet brilliant way to fight the BDS movement. At the same time, during the holiday season they are helping people who genuinely have less for their holidays.
This group of activists is mobilizing people—now spreading throughout Britain–to go the major supermarkets which have been targeted by the Boycott-Divestment-Sanction movement and make major purchases of Israeli manufactured foods and other goods. This encourages the businesses to recognize that they Jews do not want them to take an economic loss by resisting the pressure to participate in the anti-Israel boycott. In turn the goods being purchased are being turned over to local relief agencies which are in need of adequate resources to help feed the homeless and hungry especially during the holiday season. Coinciding with Hannukah as well, it is way for the Jewish community to celebrate the holiday by turning angry protests against Jews into actions which reflect well on Jewish relations with the general community; in addition to fighting the BDS movement.
