Gertrude Morris

Gertrude Morris, 96, a longtime resident of Maplewood, died Nov. 5, 2015. She was born in Hunterdon County and also had lived in Newark.

Mrs. Morris was a home teacher working out of the Branch Brook School in Newark for 20 years. 

She attended Montclair State Teachers College and obtained a master’s degree from New York University. 

She was one of the first members of the Women’s Army Corps and served in New Guinea and the Philippine Islands during World War II.

She was an active member of the Newark Teachers Union and took part in two extended strikes. She was a political activist who was devoted to the cause of racial justice and women’s rights. She and her husband travelled and studied at various universities throughout the world. 

After her retirement, she volunteered on the Child Placement Review Board, an organization that made recommendations to aid in the placement of at-risk children. She also volunteered at Planned Parenthood in Newark until the age of 90. 

Predeceased by her husband of 62 years, Leonard, she is survived by two daughters, Linda Morris and Patricia Morris (David Brooks), and two grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements were private. Memorial contributions may be made to Planned Parenthood.
