Henry Ely Roey

Henry Ely Roey, 89, of Lakewood died Feb. 1, 2011. He was born in Brooklyn and lived in Lakewood most of his life before spending his retirement in Freehold; Lake Worth, Fla.; and Leisure Village, Lakewood.

Mr. Roey ran several businesses after World War II, including Roey’s Bar in Lakewood and, in Wrightstown, the Dutchess motel, restaurant, liquor store, and bar; and the UN Bar.

He graduated from Lakewood High School in 1939.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1942; during World War II, he served in the Pacific Theater as a mechanic for P-38s.

He was a member of the Jewish War Veterans and the 49th Squadron Association.

He is survived by his wife of almost 28 years, Estelle (“Penny”) Bloom; his daughter, Patricia Freedman; his son, Kenneth Roey; three stepchildren, Phyllis Davis, Herbert Bloom, and Heidi Bloom; his sister, Ethel Foster of California; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services were held Feb. 3 with arrangements by Bloomfield-Cooper Jewish Chapels, Lakewood.
