Henry Warner

Henry Warner, 87, of Short Hills died Jan. 14, 2016. Born in Brooklyn, his family endured the Great Depression by moving to a farm in East Brunswick, where they grew vegetables and raised chickens. The family next moved to Hillside for several years, followed by a move to Newark. 

At Weequahic High School, Mr. Warner served as student body president, National Honor Society president, and debate team member. He graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology at age 19, one of the youngest graduates in the institute’s history. 

He was a founding member of Hertz Warner & Co., a brokerage firm with membership on the New York Stock Exchange and 11 offices nationwide. He spent the next six years of his career trading on the floor of the American Stock Exchange, and completed his career by creating a hedge fund that he ran until his death. 

An avid tennis player, he was a member of Orange Lawn Tennis Club for 21 years. He also was a member of Temple B’nai Jeshurun in Short Hills. As a younger man, he taught an adult school course, “The Stock Market and You,” for 12 years, and later in life served as a member of the UJA investment committee for nine years.

Predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Ina (Finkelstein), whom he married at 19, he is survived by two daughters, Dorothy (Andrew) Greene of Warren and Marjory (David) McKee of Short Hills; his son, Adam (Susan) of Short Hills; a sister, Sandy Luftig; a brother, Richard; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and his companion of seven years, Janet Thieberger, a former elementary school classmate. 

Services were held Jan. 17 with arrangements by Bernheim-Apter-Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel, Livingston.
