Herman J. Frigand

Herman Joseph Frigand, 96, of Morristown died March 1, 2011. He was born in Brooklyn and as child lived on a farm in Connecticut with his family. He later moved back to Brooklyn before moving to Morristown in 1949.

Mr. Frigand worked for 44 years (1949-1993) as an engineer for the U.S. Army at Picatinny Arsenal, where he distinguished himself with recognition in the areas of ballistics and propellants.

He earned a degree in chemical engineering from Brooklyn College. In school he was a standout athlete in both baseball and football, and played against future hall of fame quarterback Sid Luckman.

He enlisted in the U.S. Army as a private in 1942 and saw action in both the landings at Anzio and later that year in the first wave on D-Day at Normandy, where his entire platoon — except for two — were killed.

He was a longtime member of Morristown Jewish Center Beit Yisrael, where he served as president, chair of the Kol Nidre Campaign, a lifetime member of the board of directors, and the founder and leader for 40 years of the award-winning Minyonaires Youth Group.

Predeceased by his wife, Lillian, in 1992, he is survived by two sons, Neal and Dennis, both of Morristown.

Services were held March 3 at Morristown Jewish Center Beit Yisrael with arrangements by Bernheim-Apter-Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel, Livingston. Memorial contributions may be made to MJCBY.
