High Holy Days Services

The Jewish New Year 5779 begins with Rosh HaShanah on Sunday night, Sept. 9, and continues through Tuesday evening, Sept. 11. Yom Kippur begins the evening of Tuesday, Sept. 18, and ends Wednesday, Sept. 19. The following synagogues will hold special programs open to the community:

Bnai Keshet, Montclair — No tickets are required for High Holy Day services, which will be held at Central Presbyterian Church in Montclair except for the second day of Rosh HaShanah, with services at Bnai Keshet.

B’nai Shalom, West Orange — Children are invited to The Bible Players, a presentation of Torah stories during the Yom Kippur Neilah service at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 19. Call 973-731-0160.

Chabad Center of Northwest NJ, Rockaway — Services are open to the community at the synagogue and its satellite centers in Mountain Lakes, Montville, Randolph, Budd Lake, and Sparta. For those unable to attend services, a home or hospital visitation service and shofar blowing is available.

Chabad of SE Morris County, Madison — High Holy Day services open to the community will be held at The Madison Hotel, Convent Station.

Rosh HaShanah services will be held Sunday, Sept. 9, at 6:45 p.m. followed by a dinner, and continue Monday-Tuesday, Sept. 10-11, at 10 a.m., followed by a festive kiddush reception.

Yom Kippur services will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 18, at 7 p.m. and Wednesday, Sept. 19, at 10 a.m.

Children’s programs will be held on Sept. 10, 11, and 19 at 11 a.m. for ages 3-12.

Congregation Shomrei Emunah, Montclair — Rabbinic intern Lily Lucey will lead family services on Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur. High Holy Day services are free and open to the public. RSVP at shomrei.org or call 973-746-5031.

Morristown Jewish Center Beit Yisrael — A Rosh Hashanah Family Service will be held Monday, Sept. 10, and Tuesday, Sept. 11, at 9:15 a.m. Children’s programming will be followed by a snack. RSVP to Karen Lilienfeld at karen@mjcby.org or 973-538-9292.

Mount Freedom Jewish Center, Randolph — Open Beginner’s High Holiday Services will be held for both Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur, including an interactive, hour-long service on Monday, Sept. 10 (Rosh HaShanah), at 11 a.m., and on Wednesday, Sept. 19 (Yom Kippur), at 11:30 a.m. RSVP to 973-895-2100 or office@mtfjc.org.

Temple Sinai, Summit — High Holy Day tickets are free through Jewish Federation of Greater MetroWest NJ’s MetroPass program. Tickets are available for erev Rosh HaShanah services at 7:30 p.m., on Sunday, Sept. 9; first-day Rosh HaShanah services on Sept. 10 at 9 and 11:45 a.m.; and Yom Kippur services on Tuesday, Sept. 18, at 7:30 p.m., and on Sept. 19 at 9 and 11:45 a.m. Contact Sarah Segal at ssegal@jfedgmw.org or 973-929-2952.

Thirty-minute Rosh HaShanah family services are open to the community on Monday, Sept. 10, at 2:30 p.m. Contact RabbiGershon@templesinainj.org.

Temple Sharey Tefilo-Israel, South Orange — A “Come as You Are” Erev Rosh Hashanah service will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 9. This intergenerational celebration will feature songs and the High Holy Day band on the TSTI lawn (weather permitting); bring a picnic blanket.

A Rosh HaShanah family service will be held Monday, Sept. 10, at 2:15 p.m., followed by a community Tashlich service at 3:30 at the South Orange Duck Pond. Bring a picnic blanket and refreshments.

A Yom Kippur family service will be held at 2:15 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 19.
