Hirsch Silverman
Hirsch Lazaar Silverman, 99, of Chicago died Aug. 29, 2014. Born in Brooklyn, he resided in Newark until 1965 and then for 44 years in West Orange before moving to Chicago in 2009.
By profession, Dr. Silverman was a clinical and forensic psychologist. For over 40 years, he was a leading educator in the fields of psychology, behavioral sciences, mental health, and education. He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Sigma Xi, Psi Chi, and Mensa, and a diplomate and research fellow of the International Society of Philosophical Enquiry.
He received his BS from City College of New York in 1936, an MS from City University of New York in 1938, an MA from New York University in 1947, his PhD in 1951 from Yeshiva University, an MA from Seton Hall University in 1957, his doctor of science from Lane College in Jackson, Tenn., in 1962, an honorary LLD from Florida Memorial College in 1965, and his doctor of humane letters from Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine in 1972.
He was a professor and chairman of the Psychology Department at Yeshiva University, New York City, from 1959 to 1965, and then professor and chair of educational psychology at Seton Hall University, South Orange, until 1980. He was also a member of multiple organizations, national and international, dealing with the science of psychology.
He was the author of 23 books, including nine volumes of poetry, and contributed articles to over 270 national and international journals.
His achievements in literature included fellow of the World Academy of Poets, member of the Academy of American Poets, and past trustee of the New Jersey Poetry Society.
He was a founding fellow of The International Academy of Poets, a member of The Royal Society of Literature, a Benjamin Franklin Fellow of The Royal Society of Arts of England, and a fellow of The World Poetry Society and the United Poets Laureate Academy.
He was the recipient of the first annual Creative Leadership Award of NYU’s Kappa Delta Pi chapter.
Predeceased by his wife of 61 years, Mildred Friedlander Silverman, he is survived by his daughter, Hyla Silverman of Los Angeles; two sons, Morton Silverman (Kineret Jaffe) of Chicago and Stuart Silverman (Paula Silver) of Los Angeles; a sister, Helen Lomazow of Monroe Township; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Services were held Sept. 2 with arrangements by Menorah Chapels at Millburn, Union.
