Irwin Dorros

Irwin Dorros, 89, of Green Village died June 22, 2019. He was born in Brooklyn and lived in the Chatham area for the past 37 years.

Dr. Dorros’ professional career spanned 47 years in the Bell System, starting at Bell Telephone Laboratories, where he led programs in a number of communications technologies, including early cellular radio and Picturephone. His career continued at AT&T, where he led the Network Planning Division and served as the lead executive in formulating AT&T technical positions for the legislative proceedings and eventual breakup and transition of AT&T and the Bell company spin-offs. Other than a decade consulting after he retired, he finished his career at Bell Communications Research, where he was responsible for the work program for the 5,000 R&D scientists, engineers, and software specialists.

He earned B.S. and M.S. degrees in electrical engineering from MIT and was awarded the Doctor of Engineering Science degree from Columbia University in electrical engineering in 1962.

He served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps in Japan during the Korean War from 1950 to 1951.

Throughout his lifetime, he served on 24 professional, community, and education boards, committees, and councils. He earned 10 awards, including being named twice one of the 25 Most Influential People in the Communications Industry by Communications Week. He had over 50 technical publications and held five patents.

Predeceased by his wife of 64 years, Janet, and his daughter, Gail, he is survived by two sons, Mark (Sandra) and Gerry (Arielle); and six grandchildren.

Services were held June 25 with arrangements by Bernheim-Apter-Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel, Livingston. Memorial contributions may be made to Daughters of Israel, West Orange.
