Irwin Kimmelman
Judge Irwin I. Kimmelman, 84, of Bernardsville died Sept. 12, 2014. He was born in Newark and also maintained a home on the Jersey shore.
Judge Kimmelman had a 45-year career in law and public service. He was a partner at the law firms of Hannoch, Weisman and Kimmelman, Wolff, and Samson. He was elected to the New Jersey General Assembly in 1963 and served as Essex County General Counsel from 1968 to 1970. In 1982, he was appointed by NJ Gov. Thomas H. Kean to serve as Attorney General, a position he held until 1986. He was a Judge of the Superior Court of New Jersey, Chancery Division, 1970-1976, and again from 1989 to 1994, at which point he was appointed to the Appellate Division, where he served until his retirement in 2000.
He graduated from the Rutgers School of Business Administration in 1952 and Harvard Law School in 1955.
He was an avid boater and fisherman.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Margaret; his daughter, Joan (Edward) Fein of Short Hills; his son, Douglas (Carol) of Bernardsville; a brother, Barry of California; and six grandchildren.
Services were held Sept. 14 with arrangements by Menorah Chapels at Millburn, Union.
