Jacob Kirshner
Dr. Jacob Kirshner, 84, of East Brunswick died Feb. 18, 2011. Born in New York City, he resided in South River for 50 years before moving to East Brunswick in 2009.
Prior to his retirement in 1994, Dr. Kirshner had a private medical practice, the Sayreville Medical Group, where he worked for 37 years, specializing in internal medicine.
He graduated from City College of New York in 1945 at age 18 and the State University of New York College of Medicine in 1951, specializing in internal medicine. He was a resident at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City from 1953 to 1954. He had been on the staff of St. Peter’s Medical Center, New Brunswick, since 1957 and served a term as chief of the medical staff.
A World War II U.S. Navy veteran, he served from June 1945 to July 1946.
Dr. Kirshner was active in the Jewish Federation of Greater Middlesex County, having served as president of one of its predecessor organizations, the Jewish Federation of Raritan Valley, from 1978 to 1980. A former chair of the federation’s Jewish Community Relations Council, he was a life member of the federation board since 1985.
A member of Congregation Anshe Emeth of South River since 1959, he served on numerous committees and as synagogue president from 1972 to 1975. He again was president from 2003 to 2004. He was also a member of Young Israel of East Brunswick.
Dr. Kirshner was a member and chair of the local committee for State of Israel Bonds for many years, a member of the state board of the Jewish National Fund, and was active in the Anti-Defamation League. His activities included numerous missions to Israel, Jordan, Germany, and the former Soviet Union.
His biography is listed in Who’s Who in America, 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2010, and in Who’s Who in Medicine and Who’s Who in Science and Technology, all the same years.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Sylvia Shyken Kirshner; two sons, Dan of East Brunswick and Eli of Ridgewood; two daughters, Miriam Kirshner of San Diego and Ruth Kirshner Novick of Millburn; and five grandchildren.
Services were held Feb. 20 at Young Israel with arrangements by Mount Sinai Memorial Chapels, East Brunswick. Memorial contributions may be made to Friends of Yad Sarah, New York, NY; Jewish Federation of Greater Middlesex County, South River; or Raritan Valley chapter of Hadassah, Highland Park.
