Jazz, dance at Newark museum
“Jazz, Dance, and Dialogue with Greg Wall and Carolyn Dorfman” will be presented Sunday, Dec. 6, at 2 p.m. at the Jewish Museum of New Jersey, housed at Newark’s landmark Congregation Ahavas Sholom.
The free program will feature jazz saxophonist Greg Wall and special guests and choreographer Carolyn Dorfman and her dancers in a celebration of the artistic and cultural roots of both Jewish and African-American artists and their connections. It is being held in connection with “Jazz, Jews, and African-Americans: Cultural Intersections in Newark and Beyond,” an exhibit that explores the relationships among Jews and African-Americans in the performance, production, and promotion of jazz. With an emphasis on Newark’s jazz history, the exhibit examines the cooperative and sometimes contentious relationships of Jews and African-Americans in the jazz community.
Registration is required; call 973-485-2609.
The exhibit is a collaboration of the New Jersey Performing Arts Center, the Institute of Jazz Studies at Rutgers University-Newark, the Jewish Museum of New Jersey, Congregation Ahavas Sholom, WBGO Jazz 88.3FM, and the Clinton Memorial AME Zion Church. It runs through Dec. 13; hours are Sundays, noon-5 p.m.; Tuesdays, 2-4 p.m.; Thursdays, 6-8 p.m. and by appointment.
