Jerome Okin

Jerome J. Okin, 92, of Boynton Beach, Fla., died Aug. 29, 2015. Born in Newark, he lived in Newark for the first 27 years of his life, later living in Maplewood for 13 years and in West Orange for 37 years before relocating to Boynton Beach in 2005.

Mr. Okin worked as a salesman and buyer for Saffer-Simon, Inc., in Newark, eventually becoming a partner in the firm. After retiring from Saffer-Simon, he and his wife Doris owned Colours, Inc., in Millburn for 13 years, where they sold occasional furniture, decorative accessories, and jewelry. After relocating to Florida, he worked as a substitute teacher for the Palm Beach County school system until after his 90th birthday.

He graduated from Weequahic High School, Newark. He graduated from New York University, Beta Gamma Sigma, with a degree in accounting. 

He served during World War II in the Army Air Corps, flying 36 combat missions as a tail gunner in the Pacific. He was awarded the Air Medal and Distinguished Flying Cross for his service.

He was a member of Temple B’nai Abraham, Livingston.

He is survived by his wife, Doris Saffer Okin; his son, Edward of Greenacres, Fla.; his daughter, Ellen (Jerry) Powers of Fanwood; a sister, Phyllis Jacobwitz of Livingston; and two grandsons.

Services were held Sept. 2 with arrangements by Palm Beach National Chapel, Lake Worth, Fla. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Palm Beaches.
