Jonathan Roth

Jonathan Roth, 85, of Cleveland died Nov. 15, 2012. Born in Munkach, Czechoslavakia, he was a Holocaust survivor whose mother and six youngest brothers and sisters were killed at Auschwitz-Birkenau.

He and his father worked in a labor camp in Jaworzno, Poland, where his father died. He immigrated to the United States in 1952, living in Cleveland for 60 years. His sister Shari also survived the war and lived in the former Soviet Union until 1974, when they were reunited after a 35-year separation.

Mr. Roth was a heavy equipment operator and mechanic and a life member of the Union of Operating Engineers.

He led the morning minyan for 20 years at B’nai Jeshurun Congregation, Pepper Pike, Ohio, which recently honored him at a dinner in which the Jonathan Roth Torah Fund was established.

He is survived by his wife, Alice; his daughter, Rabbi Julie Roth; two sons, Mark and Gary; and nine grandchildren.

Services were held Nov. 16 with arrangements by Berkowitz-Kumin-Bookatz Memorial Chapel, Cleveland.
